3/11 Kids’ Photo Journal, a photography project for and by the children affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, is entering its fourth year with a greater sense of urgency than any of its previous years.

The project, which involves children from the worst affected areas of the triple disasters that devastated Japan on March 11, 2011, documents the recovery and reconstruction efforts of not only their hometowns but most importantly, their lives. 3/11 Kids’ Photo Journal shows the reality of these children’s lives as they try to get back to some semblance of normality away from the media’s attention. This is the side of 3/11 that newspapers and broadcasters do not cover - as a result, the victims’ voices are lost and with them their cries for help too.

Fighting tirelessly to give these children a voice is the project founder and coordinator Yumi Goto. Along with a team of professional photographers and various other volunteers, Yumi has put together a 2014 weekly planner consisting of photographs and journal extracts by the 23 children from across Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures. Many of these children are still in temporary housing, some are separated from family members, and almost all have lost friends or family, and most of all they’ve had their peaceful childhoods interrupted.

Despite their ongoing hardships, they are adapting as children do, and are unanimously united in the common goal of making sure the rest of Japan and the world doesn’t forget the plight of their hometowns, which they believe have a long way to go before being fully recovered.
